There use to be a time when children had respect for adults; if they got out of line, it wasn't uncommon for an adult in their family or any other adult to check them and get them in line. Well here in latter times, things have really changed.
This story disturbed the hell out of me because this little boy is only 5 years old and has already committed the most disrespectful act one can do to another human being.
What I'm not understanding is why is the grandmother making excuses for his actions?
This leads me to believe abuse is a normal factor in her life.

Its so easy to be angry and say that that child needs a good whopping, but in this case I don't think it would solve anything. There are some serious issues going on in that house. That child is only 5 which mean in his short life, he was not taught how to respect others and he thinks that hitting and abusing is the way to communicate.
