To Be or NOT To Be...GAY!
Since the early part of this month, there have been rumors on the radio and written on diverse blog sites about Trey Songz being either Bi, openly gay or a brotha on the DL. He is one of many celebrities whose sexuality has been questioned. Along with Trey, you have Rockmond Dunbar, Will Smith AND his wife Jada Pickett-Smith, Missy Elliott, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, The Late Great Luther Vandross, Freddie Jackson, Queen Latifah and the list goes on and on...
All of the celebs listed have fought to prove they are not.When a black celebrity is listed as gay it's like they become black balled from the black community and the entire industry; case and point Tevin Campbell. Tevin Campbell was an extraordinary talented vocalist. When he first sang (I Hope) Tomorrow Will Bring, the critics deemed him the next Michael Jackson! In 1999, while he was riding high on his career, he was arrested for soliciting oral sex from an under cover police officer posing as a male prostitute. He was what I call snatched out of the closet and wasn't given a fair chance. Sadly, his career came to an abrupt end. No one was checking for Tevin anymore; he was shunned away by the black community; his own people.
This is the very reason black celebrities who really are gay can't come out to the public; it's the same reason why so many ordinary black men and women stay hidden in the closet or in an unwanted heterosexual relationship because the black community will disown, and disgard them like yesterday's news. It would be like committing career suicide. For years people have speculated about Queen Latifah's sexuality;
and I love her for not telling one way or another and why should she?
It all started when she played Cleo in the movie Set It Off. I actually had conversations with people who said " NO! she played that part too good!"...WTF is that? correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't she paid to act? If she had not been convincing, the same people would've said " They should've got someone else to play that part!" You just can't please everybody.
Now here it is, Trey Songz is riding high on his new CD, he's in high demand, and he's making good money. Someone or some people are not happy for him, so what do they do? they put out the rumor that he's gay and is in a committed relationship with inde singer/songwriter Brandon Hines.(Allegedly) People have brought proof of this relationship to a certain blog who is constantly writing about this. They're claiming they have pics of them together and naked pictures of Trey Songz (I'll keep my thoughts to my self about the latter..whoo)! These were submitted by someone who claims to have been a "friend" of Trey Songz. They told stories of how Trey carries on around Atlanta,How he cheats on Brandon and what types of guys he likes.
The alleged information was submitted to the black owned blog by a black straight man. Children, listen to me good... IF he has that type of information and he knows for a fact all that went on in the alleged relationship between Trey and Brandon, that man is NOT straight! My guess is, he's jealous that Trey's career is taking off and his is still at square one, he hasn't passed go and he hasn't collected his $200.00. It's a shame that we as black people try to destroy one another instead of building one another up.
Perhaps, if the black community were accepting of gay people, no one would have the power to attempt to destroy another's career.For some odd reason, in the black community, being gay is the absolute worst thing you could be. When people come out, a lot of times, their family and (so called) friends ostracize them and turn their backs on them. If a black celebrity who is considered a star to us came out, we would stop purchasing their music, books, or whatever else they had for sale,
wouldn't go to their movies, we would just stop supporting their career period.
When a Caucasian celebrity comes out, they are supported the more (IE: Rosie, Ellen and Elton John). and I ask, WHY IS THAT?
What does one sexuality have to do with ones talent? Who they're sleeping with does not affect how well they sing a song or act in a movie. I've been told "It messes up the fantasy." For real? That's the best one can come up with? Well, since it's a fantasy, why not fantasize he's straight? It's just silly to me. I don't know if the rumors about the Queen, Will & Jada or Trey are True or False, all I care is that they give me what I expect and pay for and that's excellent entertainment.
So, I'm asking you to give me honest feedback, does it matter if your favorite or a celeb is gay or not?... Holla @ me somebody!

I will be brief... The black community is admittedly and unapologetically anti-homosexual or homophobic - FACT! The black church position is NEVER going to change which is why the black gay community has finally decided to start their own churches. The message from the black church and most traditional churches in general is that we can't co-exist in worhsip and praise without denying who we are. That said, I feel if a black person decides they want to pursue a life of fortune and fame then they need to consider the possibility of being exposed and the possible consequences - especially if they know they have damaging photos and/or a video tape out there. Is that right? No! Yet, it is what it is... And I believe a smart person should consider all this and make a decision upfront how they will portray themselves to their fans. What I love about people like Luther and Queen Latifah is they NEVER denied or admitted their sexual affinity because it's really not our business, but more importantly they didn't lead us to think they were straight. To me therein lies the real problem - it's the deceit that piss people off! And yes people do spend their money to buy into a fantasy of sorts. Luther and Queen were always ambiguous about their dealings - even unto the grave in Luther's case. As for Tevin Campbell, my heart went out to him because he was very young back then, exposed against his will and caught doing something EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
ReplyDeleteI honestly am sickened by the idea that any black celeb's would feel as though they have to keep their sexual orientation a secret do to the fact that they would be ostracized by their own people. I feel it is your choice to say or not to say...whether or not your gay. I for one would be ecstatic if more black celeb's would come out the closet. Take Wanda Sykes for example. She had never been asked about her sexuality. It wasn't until the whole prop 8 fiasco that she mentioned she was gay. I look at someone like Wanda Sykes and put her in the category as a Pioneer. You really have to be brave to come out now a days and say your gay ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE CELEB AND BLACK!!! I look at all the positive things that will happen afterwards though. Of coarse ignorant people will always have something to say negative. The church will too. The more we talk about it though breaks down the walls and barriers of fear that hetrosexual homophobic people might have. If a black MALE or female celeb spoke up about being gay, we move up another level in the fight to help EVERYONE but more importantly THE BLACK COMMUNITY realize there is nothing wrong with HOMOSEXUALITY!!! IT'S NOT A CHOICE, and FYI their are a whole lot of homosexual men and women in this world. This isn't some new epidemic that just came out of nowhere. Were queer and we've been here! I have nothing against anyone keeping their private life private. As I said before it takes a lot of courage to come out and say yeah I AM GAY, now back to our regularly scheduled program. If you live in the public eye they never make it that easy for us. I also understand that celebrities are also people. They are not indestructable they have the same fears as everyone else and it is hard to have that kind of pressure on your back it takes a lot to be brave and deal with the scrutiny from everyone else. As I type I think about Martin Luther King and how he fought for Black people. I wish we had some Black & GAY fighting for our rights like that. It has also come to my attenion that media never gave Wanda Sykes as much coverage about her coming out as they gave the chris brown and Rihanna incident or the Tiger Woods incident. So hey maybe more black celeb's should come out and say they are gay because the media doesn't really shine a light on the positive things black people do, their to busy trying to remind people about the negative things that go on.
ReplyDeleteWell, both of you have some powerful statements. Now JM, as far as Wanda Sykes, her fanbase is mostly white so she can come out and not have any problems from the black community, but let that have been Mo'Nique, it would've been hell from the black community. It's like this man said last night, we're taught to hate ourselves bacause our parents and the church.Tony always says the Black church, but the white church isn't exactly celebrating homosexuals either. But I have another topic I'm going to post dealing with the homosexual churches.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the responses on that one.
